1. What faux leather and real leather actually are
How faux leather is made
Faux leather is a fabric base — usually polyester, cotton or nylon — coated with a thin layer of polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The plastic surface is embossed with rollers to imitate the grain of natural hide. PU-based faux leather is softer and more flexible; PVC is stiffer and feels more obviously plastic. Both are petroleum-derived and require industrial chemical processing.
You will see the same material sold as vegan leather, synthetic leather, pleather, leatherette and bonded leather. It appears in jackets, handbags, footwear, upholstery and car interiors wherever the look of leather is wanted at a lower price.
How real leather is made
Real leather is made by tanning — a process that converts raw animal hide into a stable material that resists decomposition while staying flexible. The two dominant methods are chrome tanning, using chromium salts, and vegetable tanning, using tannins from tree bark. Chrome tanning accounts for roughly 80–90% of leather produced worldwide because it is faster and produces a softer, more consistent result.[3] Vegetable tanning takes considerably longer — weeks rather than days — and produces a firmer leather that develops patina more readily, which is why it is favoured for premium goods.
Leather's structure is a network of interlocking collagen fibres. That structure is what gives it tensile strength, abrasion resistance and breathability — properties that come from the material itself rather than from a coating. Decrum's leather jackets use full-grain and top-grain lambskin.
2. Real leather grades: full-grain, top-grain, genuine, suede
Real leather is graded by which layer of the hide is used and how the surface is finished. Grade affects durability, appearance and price more than any other single factor. The lifespans below are typical industry estimates, not measured test results.
Full-grain
Retains the entire outer grain surface — the layer where collagen fibre density is highest. Nothing is sanded or buffed away. Full-grain develops patina, resists abrasion better than any other grade, and is the longest-lasting. Visible pores, natural markings and grain variation are signs of authenticity, not defects. It is the most expensive grade, used in premium men's leather jackets and women's leather jackets.
Top-grain
The outer surface is lightly sanded to remove imperfections, giving a smoother, more uniform finish than full-grain. That processing removes part of the densest fibre layer, trading a little durability for visual consistency. Top-grain is the most common grade in quality jackets, blazers and bags.
Genuine leather
Made from the layers below the top grain, often embossed to imitate full-grain texture. It is thinner, less durable and cheaper. Worth knowing: "genuine leather" on a label confirms the material is real hide but tells you nothing good about quality — it is the entry grade, not a mark of quality.
Suede
Produced from the inner split of the hide and buffed to raise a soft nap. Lighter and more flexible than grain leather, but more absorbent and less weather-resistant. Our suede versus leather comparison covers the texture and care differences.

4. Durability and why faux leather fails
What hydrolysis does to a faux leather jacket
Faux leather does not simply wear out — it chemically decomposes. Water molecules break the ester bonds in the polyurethane, a reaction called hydrolysis, driven by ambient humidity, perspiration and moisture in cleaning products. As polymer chains shorten, the coating loses elasticity, tensile strength falls and bond strength between coating and backing drops until the layers separate.[5] That separation is the peeling people see, and it starts at stress points — elbows, creases, collar edges — before spreading.
Two things make this different from ordinary wear. First, it happens whether or not the jacket is worn, because humidity alone drives it. Second, it is irreversible: once the coating delaminates, there is no repair. Heat, humidity and strong sunlight all accelerate it.[5]
Real leather has no coating to delaminate. Its failure mode is drying — the gradual loss of oils that keep fibres flexible — and that is preventable with conditioning every three to six months. Our leather jacket care guide covers the schedule.
Can damaged leather be repaired?
Real leather is repairable at nearly every stage. Surface scratches buff out with conditioner or balm — see how to remove scratches from leather. Faux leather offers none of these options once the coating goes.
5. Appearance, texture and ageing
How to tell them apart
Real leather shows natural grain variation, visible pores, slight colour inconsistency and surface markings, because every hide is unique. Faux leather has a uniform surface with a repeating embossed pattern, no true pores and consistent colour throughout. Look closely at a cut edge: real leather shows a fibrous cross-section, faux shows a woven fabric base under a plastic film.
Smell is the other quick test. Real leather has an earthy scent from tanning; faux leather smells of chemicals or plastic, most strongly when new.
Patina — the part faux leather cannot imitate
Full-grain leather darkens and enriches in colour over time through oxidation, handling and light exposure. That is patina, and it is unique to each jacket and owner. It is also why vintage leather jackets hold value while worn synthetics do not. Faux leather does the reverse: it peels, cracks and fades, so it looks worn out rather than worn in.
6. Price and cost-per-wear
Real leather costs more upfront
No argument here. A faux leather jacket typically sells for $50–$200. Real leather generally starts around $200 for top-grain lambskin and runs to $2,000 or more for premium full-grain. The gap reflects material cost, tanning and construction.
The cost-per-wear model
The more useful question is what each material costs per wear across the years you actually own it.

This is Decrum's own illustrative model, not measured data. It assumes real leather is worn roughly twice as often as faux (80 versus 40 wears a year) because breathability widens the usable temperature range, and it uses the lifespan estimates from the table above. Purchase price is taken at mid-market. Change any assumption and the result moves — the model is published so you can do exactly that. It excludes conditioning costs, which add roughly $15–$30 a year for real leather.
On these assumptions a $500 real leather jacket works out cheaper per wear than repeatedly replacing a $60 faux jacket, even though it costs eight times more on day one. The longer you keep a jacket, the more the arithmetic favours real leather. We go deeper in why you should invest in leather.
7. Comfort and breathability
This is the difference people notice fastest in real wear. Leather's collagen fibre network is porous, so water vapour from perspiration passes through the material while wind is blocked. A polymer coating on faux leather is a sealed barrier by design, so moisture is trapped between skin and jacket.[4] Some premium microfibre synthetics are engineered with porous coatings to improve this, but they remain meaningfully less breathable than hide.[4]
Real leather also moulds to the wearer. Collagen fibres relax at stress points — shoulders, elbows, back — over the first dozen or so wears, so the jacket ends up shaped to one body rather than a factory pattern. Thinner hides break in faster: lambskin, typically around 0.5–0.8 mm, softens sooner than heavier cowhide. 8. Environmental and ethical impact
Neither material is clean, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Here is the honest version.
The case against faux leather
Faux leather uses no animal products, which is its central ethical argument and a real one. Against that, it is a petroleum-derived plastic that does not biodegrade. Synthetic textiles shed microplastic fibres throughout their life, and shedding increases as material abrades with wear.[6] Fibrous microplastics are estimated to make up a large share of the total microplastic load in wastewater globally.[6] PVC specifically carries additional concerns around dioxins and phthalates that PU does not.[8]
The case for real leather
Around 99% of leather made worldwide comes from livestock hides — cattle, sheep, goat and pig — that are a by-product of the meat industry.[1] Livestock are not raised for their hides: hides represent on average only about 3–4% of the animal's value to the farmer, so the economics do not support raising animals for leather.[1] Industry analysis also indicates that ending leather use would not reduce cattle numbers, because those are set by demand for meat and dairy.[1] Tanning currently upcycles roughly 7.3 million tonnes of hides a year that would otherwise be disposed of.[1]
A claim circulates widely — including in an earlier version of this guide — that "99% of hides would otherwise be thrown away." That is a misreading. The 99% figure refers to the share of leather that comes from livestock as a meat by-product, not to the share of hides that would be discarded.[1] Hide-to-leather conversion is high but not universal, and we have corrected the figure rather than repeat it.
Where tanning is improving
Chrome tanning dominates the industry, but the environmental picture is not static. Vegetable tanning substitutes bark tannins for chromium salts and produces biodegradable leather. Independently, the Leather Working Group audits tanneries across energy and water use, waste, chemical management, emissions, traceability and social responsibility, awarding Gold, Silver or Bronze ratings against a published standard.[2][7] Certification is a meaningful signal when sourcing, and worth asking any brand about.
The fair summary: faux leather avoids animal use but generates persistent plastic waste and needs replacing often. Real leather uses an animal by-product, lasts far longer, and can be biodegradable when vegetable-tanned. Which trade-off matters more is a values judgement, not a factual one.
9. Maintenance and care
Faux leather
Very little to do — wipe with a damp cloth. There are no natural fibres to feed, so conditioning is pointless. The catch is that low maintenance is not an advantage here: no care routine prevents hydrolysis, because the breakdown is chemically inherent to the coating.[5]
Real leather
Real leather asks for periodic attention, costing roughly $15–$30 a year in product. Clean the surface every few weeks with a damp cloth, condition every three to six months with a lanolin or beeswax-based product, and store on a padded hanger somewhere cool and moderately dry rather than in a sealed plastic cover.

Roughly forty minutes of care a year is the trade for a jacket that stays wearable for decades. That is the whole bargain.
10. Which should you choose?
Choose faux leather if
Avoiding animal products is your primary concern, you need the jacket for a season or two rather than a decade, your budget is firmly under $100, or you want a colour or finish that natural hide does not offer. It also makes sense for trend pieces you expect to move on from before the material fails.
Choose real leather if
You want a garment that lasts ten years or more, you like materials that improve with age, you care about breathability and a jacket that shapes to you, or you are optimising for cost over the life of the item rather than the price on the tag.
